A Lamella Clarifier, also known as an Inclined Plate Settler (IPS), is a type of high-rate sedimentation tank used for separating suspended solid particles from a liquid.

It is a key piece of equipment in water and wastewater treatment, offering a highly efficient and compact solution compared to conventional clarifiers.

The operation is based on the principle of gravity sedimentation and the "shallow tank theory," enhanced by a unique design:³

1.  Influent Entry: Wastewater (influent) containing suspended solids enters the clarifier, often after pre-treatment like coagulation and flocculation to aggregate smaller particles into larger, more settleable "flocs."

    

2.  Flow Distribution: The water is distributed at the bottom or side and flows upward through a series of closely spaced, inclined plates (lamellae).

    

3. Enhanced Settling: As the water flows upwards, the suspended solids, being heavier than the water, settle downward due to gravity. The inclined plates provide a dramatically increased effective settling area within a small physical footprint.

    

4. Sludge Movement: The settled solids land on the surface of the inclined plates and slide down by gravity into a sludge collection hopper at the bottom of the unit. The plates are typically inclined between to promote this self-cleaning action.

    

5. Clarified Water Exit: The treated liquid (clarified effluent), now free of most suspended solids, rises above the plates and exits the unit, usually flowing over an overflow weir at the top.
